Monument's Cormier Places Third in State
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Monument Mountain's Ely Cormier went 3-0 on Saturday to take third place at the State Division 3 Wrestling Championships.
Cormier won the consolation final at 126 pounds by pinning Wilmington's Luke Vitale in 3 minutes, 53 seconds and helped the Spartans to the highest finish among the four Berkshire County squads at the championships.
The victory avenged Friday's pin by Vitale in the main draw quater-finals to send Cormier to the wrestlebacks.
Cormier started the day Saturday with a third-period pin of Mount Everett's Tyler Candelari. Cormier then earned a 7-5 decision over Ludlow's Lucas Alvan to reach the consy final.
Cormier's teammate Colin Kinne Saturday also finished his tournament with a victory, winning the fifth-place match at 113 pounds.
Kinne took a 9-0 decision from Mount Everett's Connor Lupiani in their final bout of the two-day event.
Kinne went 4-2 at the championships.
Monument Mountain finished in 23rd place out of 52 teams with 36 team points.
Melrose won the Division 3 team title with 10 points, edging second-place Tewksbury by one point.
Taconic finished 25th in the state with 32.5 points.
Taconic was led Saturday by Noah Poirier, who finsished fourth in the state at 152 pounds.
Poirier lost in the championship semifinals on Saturday morning, falling to Wayland's Greg Deeley, 15-4. He came back to beat East Longmeadow's Daniel Magiera in the consys, 12-4, before Ashland's Adrian Guzman earned a pin with one second left in the first period in the third-place bout.
Taconic's Broc Healey also started his Saturday in the championship semi-finals. Foxborough's Maxwell Kornbluth took an 18-8 win to move on to the 160-pound final.
Healey then was pinned by Melrose's Shea Fogarty and Triton's Douglas Alyward to place sixth in the state.
Mount Everett's Candelari ended up eighth in the state, and Lupiani placed sixth as the Eagles finished with 19 points to place 35th in the state.
Aidan Macpherson was the last wrestler standing of the three Mount Greylock Mounties who went to the state championships on Friday. He made it to the second day of competition in the consys and ended up eighth in the state. Mount Greylock earned 11 points for a 42nd place finish.
