Monument Mountain Girls Seventh at D1 State Meet
BOSTON, Mass. -- Monument Mountain junior Asa Stone placed third in the 100-yard butterfly Saturday to lead the Spartans to a seventh-place finish at the Division 1 State Championships at Boston University.
Monument Mountain finished with 109 points to place seventh among 36 schools earning points in the meet. Westford Academy finished solidly in first place with 456 points, more than double the total of runner-up Concord-Carlisle (205).
In the fly, Stone touched in 58.70 seconds, shaving three-tenths off her seed time and finishing behind a pair of swimmers from Westford, led by Michaela Martin in 56.50.
Stone's teammate, freshman Zoe Holmes, placed seventh in the 100 fly in 1:00.69 after coming in with a seed time of 1:02.08.
Stone also placed sixth in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 59.52. Westford's Martin placed first in that event in 57.84.
Holmes also pointed in the 200 individual medley, placing seventh in 2:14.77 in an event won by Bridgewater-Raynham's Megan Kramer in 2:02.16.
Monument Mountain sophomore Maddie Fife also scored points in a pair of events. She was 15th in the 200 freestyle (2:02.19) and 13th in the 500 free (5:34.04), lowering her seed time in both events.
The Spartans also picked up points in a pair of relays. In the 200 free relay, Stone, Carolina Chassi, Holmes and Fife placed eighth in 1:44.97. In the 400 free relay, the same quartet placed fifth in 3:46.81, 12 seconds behind the winning team from Westford Academy.
In Saturday's Division 2 meet, the Pittsfield girls quartet of Szofia Lewis, Kiera Devine, Jackie Roccabrunna and Jordan Bradford placed 17th in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:47.44.
All three Pittsfield relays competed in the state meet. The Generals placed 18th in the 400 free relay and 22nd in the medley relay.
Swimming as individuals, Lewis was 21st in the 100 breaststroke, Devine was 22nd in the 500 free and Bradford finished 24th in the 200 free.
Taconic freshman Mia Bencivenga placed 19th in the 500, finishing in 5:31.00, taking nearly six full seconds off her seed time.
In Sunday's boys Division 2 state championship, Wahconah's Fred Sears placed 28th in the 50 free in 23.67 seconds.
