Monument Mountain's Stone Wins Two Titles at Sectional Meet
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Monument Mountain junior Asa Stone Sunday won Central/Western Massachusetts titles in the backstroke and butterfly at the sectional meet at Springfield College.
Stone swam the 100-yard back in a state qualifying time of 59.76 seconds to edge runner-up Sara Baxter of Amherst-Pelham, who touched in 1:00.30.
In the 100 fly, Stone won by the narrowest of margins, touching in 59 seconds flat to beat Northampton's Ruby Gottlieb by one one-hundreth of a second.
Stone also helped Monument Mountain's relays place fourth in the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.
Stone swam anchor in the 400 FR, teaming with Zoe Holmes, Carolina Chassi and Maddie Fife to finish in 3:50.17. The event was won by Minnechaug in 3:40.69.
In the 200 FR, Stone swam first, followed by Chassi, Holmes and Fife for a time of 1:42.27. Longmeadow's quartet won in 1:40.39.
Holmes placed third in the 200 individual medley, swimming a time of 2:18.35. The sectional champion was Chicopee Comp's Ella Smith in 2:05.92.
Fife finished fourth as an individual in the 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 2:03.16. Minnechaug's Samantha VanZandt led the field in 1:56.54.
Taconic freshman Mia Bencivenga medaled in the 500 freestyle, finishing eighth in 5:35.93.
As a team, Monument Mountain's girls placed fourth in a field of 27 teams that scored. The Spartans finished with 150 points, seven points out of third place. Minnechaug won the team sectional title with 314 points. Pittsfield finished 14th, and Taconic was 23rd.
In the boys meet, Monument Mountain placed 19th out of 29 schools with team points. Minnechaug won the boys sectional title with 286 points.
