PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Monument Mountain golf team used a complete team effort Monday to earn the team’s second win of the season, a 201-218 victory over Pittsfield at the Country Club of Pittsfield.

Max Joyner led the Spartans with a 47 on the front 9, but the back end of the Monument Mountain lineup proved decisive as No. 6 Shea Hull came home with a 52 to tip the balance.

“That was our winning group,” Monument coach Ed Locke said of Hull and playing partner Ben Shultis (56). “Five and six matters in high school golf.

“The six guy coming in with a 52 to win the match, that’s impressive.”

Shea’s round allowed Monument to throw out a 78. Combined with Joyner, Curt Wilton (50) and Brady Whalen (52), it gave the Spartans plenty of cushion against the winless Generals.

Pittsfield did pick up an individual win on Monday as Liam Fitzgibbons earned medalist honors with a 42. Quinn Kearns (55), Lucian Lamoureaux (69) and Jeff Werhan (62) rounded out the scoring for the young Generals.

Pittsfield has a lot of newcomers filling out the lineup on a team of two seniors and four juniors. And Generals head coach Eddie Cano is encouraged by what he’s seen so far this fall.

“As a team, we’re getting better,” he said. “We have a lot of things we need to work on. Unfortunately, because of weather, we haven’t been able to get together and really get a lot of practice time in, unfortunately.

“When we start to do that and focus on our short game a little bit, I think there’s a lot of room for improvement, and we’re trending in the right way. I’m looking forward to the future.”

Locke also was happy with the fight he saw from his team on a day when players on both teams were struggling to make shots.

“The battled,” Locke said. “This is a very difficult golf course if you haven’t seen it before. There’s a lot of blind shots, a lot of up-and-downs. We play Wyantenuck, and Wyantenuck is a little more forgiving in terms of where you put the ball.

“We’re happy to come out with a ‘W,’ I know that. … It will be a good bus ride home.”

Pittsfield goes to Bennington, Vt., to play Mount Anthony on Wednesday. Monument Mountain hosts Mount Everett on Thursday.
