WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Mount Greylock senior Ben Gilooly started strong and finished strong to card a 1-over-par 37, win medalist honors and lead the Mounties to a 173-213 win over Wahconah at Waubeeka Golf Links.

Gilooly opened his round with a birdie on the 351-yard, par-4 first hole and finished with a birdie on the 453-yard, par-5 eighth and a par in front of a gallery gathering at the ninth green.

"The birdie on one was definitely a huge confidence builder for the next few holes," Gilooly said. "On one, I just had the perfect number. I had 115 in, put it to 2 feet and made the putt.

"On eight, I put myself in good position on the fairway. I had 195 dead into the wind and hit 3-iron to about 25 feet, missed the putt going up and made the putt going back - a simple birdie. It was nice."

Four of Gilooly's five Mount Greylock teammates carded rounds in the 40s on a day when the young golfers were dealt with the challenges of playing on recently aerated greens.

Tenley Smith also posted a birdie on the eighth hole on her way to a 43. And Connor Daley and Bennett Zimmerman rounded out the scoring with a 46 and a 47, respectively.

The Mounties' No. 6 player, Alexander Axt, came up strong with a 49, and even JV player Jack Cangelosi recorded a birdie on the 480-yard, par-5 fourth hole.

For a young and rebuilding Wahconah squad, Isaac Anello led the way with a 50, and Daniel Wilson and Corey Bazonski carded rounds of 53 and 54, respectively. Cullen Harrington rounded out the scoring for the visitors with a 56.

Mount Greylock (4-1) has won four straight matches after dropping its season opener against Hoosac Valley.

"The Hoosac team played really at home, and we played really well, honestly," Gilooly said. "They just got us by three shots, and that was course knowledge.

"It's been a good couple of weeks -- busy, but it's been nice."

Mount Greylock goes to Lenox on Thursday while Wahconah visits Drury.
