Frontier Volleyball Team Survives Five-Setter at Mount Greylock

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The sixth-seeded Frontier volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to take the last two sets and a 27-25, 16-25, 20-25, 25-20, 16-14 win from Mount Greylock on Wednesday in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 semi-finals.

Jenna Benzinger had 15 kills, and Autumn Delaney added eight for the second-seeded Mounties (17-3).

Dagny Albano had 29 assists and five aces, and Marley Buffis had seven digs for Mount Greylock.

The match was well played with great back and forth action from both sides, leading to the dramatic finish. From start to finish, the match had most on the edge of their seats. Both teams put on a dynamic display of defensive and offensive volleyball. Frontier was able to overcome the late surge of Mount Greylock, which battled back from a three-point deficit in the fifth set to tie things up before falling, 16-14.

Frontier was able to take the first set from Greylock 26-24. Frontier scoring was centered around the play of Lauren Davenport, who lead the team in kills, and Ella Deane, who lead the team in assists.

Mount Greylock answered back, winning the second set, 25-16. The Mounties were able to hold the visitors’ to their lowest scoring set with the defensive play of Dagny Albano. Greylock secured the third set, 25-20, behind Jenna Benzinger.

Frontier came back to take the fourth set 25-20 to force a fifth and deciding set. The fifth set started with a strong Mount Greylock run establishing a 4-0 lead. Frontier got back on track with a run of its own, storming back and taking 10-7 lead. The match then evened out at 14-14 when Frontier was able to block an attack by Benzinger and retain a service. The serve proved to be the last of the game, Frontier was able to win the set resulting in winning the match.

“One of our goals for the season was to make it farther than we did last season, we made it as far as we did last year so that hurts but it was still a great season,” Mount Greylock coach John Albano said.

Frontier (10-11) moves on to Saturday’s sectional final against top-seeded Lee (20-2), a three-set winner on Wednesday night.
