Mount Greylock Girls, Boys Strong at Saratoga Spa State Park

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Evan Arthur finished in third place on Saturday to lead the Mount Greylock boys cross country team to victory in the 25-team Burnt Hills Invitational at Saratoga Spa State Park.

 

The Mount Greylock girls placed second out of 19 teams behind a second-place performance by Margo Smith.

 

Smith covered the 5K course in 19 minutes, 26 seconds -- nearly a minute behind winner Brynn Wright (18:29) of Greenwich, N.Y. Wright and the Witches placed four runners in the top seven to easily win the team competition with 38 points.

 

Arthur finished in 16:24, behind champion Colin Beasor (15:53) of Greenwich. But the Mounties placed six runners in the top five en route to a 57-point day -- easily beating runner-up Lake Placid, which finished with 102.

 

Sam Culver, Jacob Fink, Cameron Castonguay and Owen Brandriss scored for Mount Greylock, placing between 12th and 16th. Josh Cheung finished just behind in 17th place.

 

Mount Greylock’s girls compiled 100 points, finishing well ahead of third-place Duanesburg (155).

 

Finishing behind Smith were Niku Darafshi, Miriam Bakija, Hannah Locklear and Helen Greenfield, who were 20th, 22nd, 24th and 25th, respectively.

 

Mount Greylock had a strong day in the sub-varsity divisions as well.

 

The Mounties’ girls won a 3K modified girls run with 51 points, leading a field of 22 teams after three Mounties placed in the top seven.

 

Eighth-grader Hazel Scullin won that race in 12:35. Josie Smith and Kate Swann were fifth and seventh, respectively.

 

Mount Greylock’s middle school boys placed second with 93 points, behind Monroe-Woodbury with 84. Charlie McWeeny (11:39) and Corban Miller were seventh and ninth, respectively, for the Mounties.
