Mount Greylock Sweeps Mount Anthony
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Serena Chow served up eight aces Monday to lead the Mount Greylock volleyball team to a three-set win over Mount Anthony Union.
The 25-11, 25-10, 25-15 win gives the Mounties a 2-0 record in Berkshire North and a 2-1 record overall on the young season.
"We got a big win in the beginning [against Lee], we played Amherst hard and took a set from them and then today," Mount Greylock coach John Albano said. "So we're very happy with how the season is starting."
Mount Greylock was in control from the start on Monday against a depleted Patriots squad.
It was up 10-6 early in the first set but put the game away on Chow's serve when she recorded three aces and Caroline Hadley and Autumn Delorey each had a kill to help run the score to 17-6.
In the second set, the key sequence again came on Chow's serve.
This time, she got the ball with the Mounties down, 7-5, and by the time the Patriots got it back, Mount Greylock had a 15-8 lead.
Dagny Albano later served out the most dominant set of the day with seven straight points -- several on aces.
Albano finished with a match-high 11 assists. Marley Buffis had six digs.
The Mounties also got strong play at the net by Hadley and Jenna Benzinger, who delivered some powerful spikes and used her size to keep Mount Anthony's hitters at bay.
John Albano agreed the 6-foot-4 senior Benzinger is a weapon that a lot of teams will not be able to counter. But he was quick to note that it is a team approach for the Mounties.
"For [Benzinger] to be able to hit the ball, a couple of other things have got to happen first," he said. "I don't want to forget about that. We need the passing, the serve receive and the setting to get her the ball -- and we have other offense as well."
Mount Greylock goes to Lenox on Wednesday.
