Mount Greylock Boys Head Back to State Semis
LEE, Mass. -- The second-seeded Mount Greylock boys tennis team won four straight matches Friday afternoon against No. 4 Belchertown at Lee High School to secure the Division 3 Western Massachusetts title with a 4-1 victory.
It started at No. 1 singles, where MOunt Greylock's Nyein Soe won, 6-0, 6-0, to earn the first point for the Mounties.
"I gave him a lot of pressure from the start and I was just going through my shots," Soe said. "I hit a ton of variety, I think I was serving pretty well today."
Mount Greylock's No. 1 doubles tandem, Jake Foehl and Gray Kaegi, went 6-0 and 6-1, giving the Mounties their second point. It was their No. 2 doubles that secured the title; Matt Wiseman and Brady Foehl won there, 6-3, 6-3.
The Mounties are coming off a Western Mass Finals loss last year and a win from the previous year; so this time around the team was prepared for the challenge.
"They knew what to expect," Mount Greylock coach Stephen Bryant said. "They knew was it was like to lose it and they knew what it was like to win it, so it made them step it and they were definitely more focused."
Greylock was able to clinch the title in three straight matches; which came with as little drama as their coach could ask for.
"It made things nice and easy today, I knew the doubles would take care of business and I knew Will [Nolan] would pull away in the end; overall everybody did well."
Nolan won his match 6-3, 6-2, earning the fourth point for Greylock.
The Mounties will travel to West Springfield Monday afternoon for the State Semi-Finals scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
