Smith, Gerry Lead Greylock Girls at Notchview

WINDSOR, Mass. -- In a preview of next week's Massachusetts state cross country championships, Mount Greylock's Grace Smith and Sophie Gerry took the top two places in a Berkshire County League meet at Notchview Reservation on Saturday.
 
Smith won in 25 minutes, 16 seconds at the same site where the commonwealth's best skiers will gather on Feb. 10.
 
Gerry finished in 27:34 to place second as Mount Greylock's girls captured six of the top 10 positions. Greta Savitsky, Brandi Gill, Margo Smith and Niku Darafshi all finished in the top 10 for the Mounties.
 
Northfield Mount Hermon's Nevada Powers (27:47) was third, and Lenox's Alice Huth finished fifth.
 
It was a good day overall for the NMH girls, who placed three in the top 10.
 
On the boys side, NMH's Estevan Velez broke through for his first win of the season, finishing in 21:12 to beat out Mount Greylock's Matthew Wiseman (21:38).
 
Wiseman was followed by three more Mounties in the top 10: Will Nolan in third and Jake Kobrin and Tommy Kirby in seventh and eighth, respectively.
 
Amherst placed three skiers in the top 10. Hoosac Valley's Jared Haley finished fifth in 23:04.
 
Lenox's top boy was Miles Marshall in 16th place in 25:08. Wahconah's Sam Pyser was just behind in 17th (25:29). Taconic's Matthew Rabasco finished 28th in a 56-boy field, covering the course in 27:39.
 
Among the girls, Hoosac Valley's top finisher was Jaime Barthe, in 14th place at 29:42. Wahconah's Lily Howes was 15th (30:06). Taconic's Rachel Tynan placed 45th (39:51).
