County Athletes Get Jump on the Season at Mount Greylock

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Not everyone could win a race at Friday’s season opening meet at Mount Greylock Regional School.

But the Mounties were the big winners before they stepped onto the track.

Friday marked what coach Brian Gill called a “soft opening” for the longest-awaited athletic facility in the county, an eight-lane track and field complex that has been discussed for the school since before the renovated middle-high school opened its doors in 2018.

“They’ve talked about it for six years, you know, and to finally have it, it’s pretty incredible,” Mount Greylock senior Noah Klompus said while waiting for the meet-ending 4-by-400 relays to get underway.

It is not the first track at Mount Greylock, but it is the first one suited for competition.

The school has been using a dirt oval for practice purposes for years and hosting meets at Williams College when the college’s schedule allowed.

But the new facility – which also includes a grass infield that will be used for lacrosse and soccer – is a game changer.

“It’s been amazing,” Klompus said. “Most seasons, we can’t practice the first two weeks because the dirt track is too wet. So being able to come out here early and really get some reps in has been amazing.”

The lack of a suitable track on campus has not stopped Mount Greylock from running one of the most successful programs in Western Massachusetts. But the new digs won’t hurt as the girls and boys teams look to defend their 2024 Western Massachusetts Championships and the girls look to build on momentum from last year’s Division 6 State Championship.

Mount Greylock will be looking to make the most of the facility over the next couple of months with four regular season home meets starting on April 15 and the Western Mass meet on May 24.

Before it gets into the regular season, the county’s runners, jumpers and throwers have a few warm-up meets in Williamstown starting with Friday’s.

The opener was a “1,1,1” event, where each athlete could enter one running, one throwing and one jumping event. On Friday, April 4, the Mounties will host a running-only event, and the next day they will host a meet just for the field events.

The mood was a little more casual on Friday afternoon, but some athletes got right down to business.

Wahconah’s Cooper Calvert, for example, won the boys high jump by clearing 6-0, a height that would have won him second place at last year’s Berkshire County Individual meet in May.

“My old [personal record] was 5-8, so that’s quite a jump up,” the Wahconah junior said.

“I’ve only practiced high jump a couple of times in practice, so getting 6 feet in a meet … it’s putting pressure on my competitors, which is good, friendly competition.

“Hopefully, we’ll get it up. I think the school record is 6-2. I’m looking to break that this year or the next.”
