BUCKLAND, Mass. – The Mount Greylock girls and boys cross country teams turned in dominant performances on Saturday at Mohawk Trail.

Oliver Swabey led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Mounties’ boys, and Anne Miller led a 1-2-3 sweep for the girls as each Mount Greylock squad earned its third team win in three outings this winter.

The boys took five of the first six spots on the leaderboard to finish with 11 points, one point off a perfect score.

Wahconah’s Fritz Sanders broke up the party with a fourth-place showing.

Quinn McDermott, who placed second for Mount Greylock on Saturday, said the terrain added a bit of a challenge on Saturday.

“It was good,” he said. “It's definitely soft, and it's definitely getting softer by the minute, so it was pretty tough to get in a groove. You kept getting interrupted by a ski tip getting caught in the powder.

“But it was good. It was a fun race.”

Lenox’s Alice Culver, who placed fifth overall in the girls race, agreed.

“It was kind of hard because the downhills were powdery, and you would come down and try to turn, and it would be powder, and you would turn right into an uphill,” she said. “It was kind of hard because you didn't have much momentum, and you really had to push it up on the uphills.”

Culver and the Millionaires placed third in the five-team girls field.

Wahconah again was the runner-up behind fourth-place Vienna Mahar, who was just four seconds out of second place.

Mount Greylock’s Cornelia Swabey and Lauren Miller backed up Anne Miller by finishing second and third, respectively. Euphemia Skinner rounded out the scoring for Mount Greylock by placing 12th.

Wahconah’s boys joined their girls team with a team silver on Saturday.

In addition to Sanders in fourth, Aidan Garcia and Nathan Miller cracked the top 10 for Wahconah.

Lenox’s boys placed third behind a 13th-place finish by Finn Jolly.

Although there are a couple of dates left on the Berkshire County League schedule this winter, the state meet at Prospect Mountain in Vermont is just around the corner on Feb. 14. And McDermott said the Mounties should have a pretty good idea who to watch out for when they go for a third straight state crown on Feb. 14.

“Me and a few of my teammates have been going to bigger races in Maine and New York and stuff, and we raced against some of those people from out east,” McDermott said. “So we got a pretty good look.

“[Sunday], we're going to be able to race them at the [Massachusetts State Nordic Program] qualifier for the Eastern High Schools,” McDermott said, referring to a U16 event at Notchview Reservation. “It will be nice to see where we stack up. Obviously, things will shift around in the two weeks before states, but it will be nice.”
