Mount Greylock Girls, Boys Top Lenox
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- With the boys and girls teams from Lenox and Mount Greylock clustered around the fence and cheering on the competitors, the Mounties’ Hannah Gilooly Thursday gutted out a win at second singles to complete a 5-0 win over Millionaires.
It was a good day all the way around for the Mounties, who also picked up a 3-2 win in the boys match.
Gilooly and Rihana Patel were the last ones on the court on a breezy evening at the Williams College courts. Gilooly emerged victorious, 7-5, 7-5, to finish the girls’ sweep.
“Hannah had a good win,” Mount Greylock girls coach John Jacobbe said. “She lost to this girl down in Lenox. And she battled throughout the whole match to pull it out.
“I love the fact that she pulled it out with the whole team watching. The [team] match wasn’t on the line, but with everyone watching, it puts a little pressure on you, and she handled the pressure well and closed out the match.”
At first singles, Mount Greylock’s Mia VanDeurzen defeated Carolina Chassi, 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 Charlotte Sanford topped Georgia Raser, 6-0, 6-3.
The Mounties’ No. 1 doubles team of Izzy Leonard and Olivia Winters defeated Emma Butler and Carolyn Cass, 6-3, 6-4. At second doubles, it was Mai O’Connor and Piper Schulman topping Ella Smith and Nicole Illingsworth, 6-2, 6-0.
“I thought Charlotte played with great precision today and controlled her match from beginning to end,” Jacobbe said. “Mia struggled with her backhand today and had some ups and downs, but she rallied around it.
“It was a good team win. It was 5-0, but every match was close.”
Mount Greylock’s girls improved to 4-1 with the victory.
The boys also went to 4-1 after winning both contested singles matches and splitting doubles play.
No. 1 Gabe Gerry edged Rocco Piretti, 7-5, 6-4. No. 2 Ryan Keating beat Jack O’Brien, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Drew Scanlon and Josh Rudin teamed up to beat Juan Marique and Connor McCormack, 6-2, 6-1 at second doubles.
Lenox earned a point for the Mounties’ default at third singles. The Millionaires’ Alex Fuster and Owen Bayne took a three-set win at first doubles from Altan McIntosh and Troy Michalak.
Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils saw improvement on both sides of the net on Thursday.
Keating, who needed three sets to win his match down at Lenox, earned a convincing win this time around. The first doubles match was a 6-3, 6-1 win for the Millionaires in South County; this time around, McIntosh and Michalak got to a third set.
“And [Piretti] played much better against Gabe this time around,” Dils said. “It was pretty lopsided the first time. He played well this time.”
The match Thursday got underway at around 5:30 under gray skies and an uncertain forecast. Some sprinkles fell early on, but the anticipated rain never materialized.
“It was a good match because there were a lot of things mentally we had to fight through,” Jacobbe said. “They were a little delayed getting here. We were a worried about the weather a little bit. But the girls fought.”
