WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- It was a perfect day for racing in an imperfect season for the Berkshire County Cross Country Ski League on Sunday afternoon at Mount Greylock.

The Mounties' boys and girls were able to keep their records in tact with seecond straight wins as each squad posted a perfect team score of 10 against Wahconah.

Col McDermott and Jacqueline Wells once again were dominant for Mount Greylock, winning by 48 and 55 seconds, respectively.

Those who got on the course said the conditions were perfect. The wind was non-existent. And the temperatures were comfortably in the mid 20s for a race delayed by 27 hours in order to get away from Saturday morning's frigid conditions.

The only thing missing: most of the teams. The COVID-19 pandemic means no trips over the mountain for the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference teams, no trips north for Simsbury, Conn., and no races yet for Hoosac Valley or Lenox, although the latter is scheduled to attend next week's races at Wahconah.

The pandemic protocols also mean no fans, which, combined with the scarcity of athletes, made for a quiet campus.

"It was a really fun course," McDermott said. "But also, a lot of it was in the woods, and it's like you're just going through with headphones on. It can get really quiet in there.

"These were definitely the best conditions at the school since I've been here. I would bet it's the best it's been in a really long time, too. It was super fast, really nice packed snow."

McDermott took advantage by cruising around the course in 16 minutes, 16 seconds.

Quinn McDermott was second in 16:04, and five more Mounties crossed the finish line before Wahconah's Friz Sanders, who led his team with a time of 18:31.

Haley Crosier once again led the Wahconah girls, finishing sixth in 20:06.

But the five girls on the Mount Greylock varsity owned the day, led by Wells, who finished in 17:35. Annie Miller placed second in 18:30.
