Prescott Leads Mount Greylock Over Taconic
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Ben Prescott carded a 6-over-par 41 on the back nine at Waubeeka Golf Links Thursday to lead Mount Greylock to a 173-199 win over Taconic.
Prescott, playing at No. 4, just missed out on sharing medalist honors with Taconic No. 1 Nate Murphy, who birdied the 515-yard, par-5 15th hole en route to a 40.
Mount Greylock's Alexander Axt, who opened his day with a birdie on the 197-yard, par-3 10th, finished at 44 along with teammates Brayden Smith and Owen Petropulos to round out the scoring for the Mounties (1-1).
Taconic used scores from Nick Slozik (51), Andrew King (53) and Derek Wurtemberger (55), who birdied the 138-yard, par-3 14th hole.
Murphy said it was an adjustment playing the less familiar back nine at Waubeeka, where Mount Greylock usually uses the front.
On the whole, he was happy with his afternoon, but he felt he left some birdie opportunities on the greens.
"I played pretty well," Murphy said. "I hit my irons well. I could have made more putts."
He did sink a 30-footer for his one birdie.
"That felt good," he said. "That brought me back to 4-over.
"All the [other] birdie putts I had, I left short. You can't do that. If you leave 'em short you don't have a chance. On [No. 13], I smoked a par putt, no chance with that either."
Mount Greylock's Prescott double bogeyed 15 but rallied to finish his day with three straight pars.
Mount Greylock goes to Hoosac Valley on Friday, while Taconic goes to Mount Anthony in Bennington, Vt.
