Smith Leads Mount Greylock Girls to Victory in Queensbury, N.Y.
QUEENSBURY, N.Y. -- Josie Smith ran a time of 19 minutes, 50.52 seconds to place second and lead the Mount Greylock girls cross country team to a first-place finish in the second varsity division at Saturday's Queensbury Invitational.
Smith finished 11 seconds behind champion Tess Fitzmaurice (19:39.71) of Greenville, N.Y., on the 3.1-mile course.
Smith also led a trio of Mounties in the top four as Jacqueline Wells and Kate Swann placed third and fourth, respectively.
The Mounties finished with 71 points, finishing 30 points ahead of runner-up Sayville.
Mount Greylock's varsity boys placed second with 89 points, 17 points behind New York's Maple Grove, in the DII race.
Josh Cheung was the top finisher for Mount Greylock, coming home in 17:14.50. The DII race was won by Voorheesville's Evan Ensslin in 16:37.30.
Cheung's teammate, Jesse Seid, was right behind him in seventh place, clocking a time of 17:22.90.
Mount Greylock dominated the modified (middle school division), taking first in both the boys and girls team races and winning both individual titles.
In the modified boys, seventh-grader Oliver Swabey won the 1.8-mile race in 6:25.93 as the Mounties took five of the top six places. Eamon Hetherington (6:48.53) and Quinn McDermott (6:59.66) were second and third, respectively. Declan Rogers (7:04.76) and Caleb Low (7:05.16) were fifth and sixth.
Mount Greylock eighth-grader Ainsley Abel won the modified girls race in 7:41.96, finishing seven seconds ahead of teammate Lily McDermott. The Mounties also scored finishes by fifth-place Sarah Polumbo (7:55.19), ninth-place Julia Kornell (8:07.49) and 10th-place Erin Keating (8:08.17).
The Mount Greylock girls won the modified team title with 25 points, beating runner-up Niskayuna by 30 points.
