WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Ben Gilooly carded an even-par round of 36 on the front nine at Waubeeka Golf Links Tuesday to lead the Mount Greylock golf team to a 172-203 win over Mount Everett.

“Ben Gilooly showed up and made a good statement to start the season,” Mount Greylock coach Mitchell Spooner said. “He was waiting for today. He put in a lot of work in the off-season, and it showed.”

Gilooly’s day was highlighted by a birdie on the 176-yard, par-3 seventh hole.

Lilly Defrietas played what Spooner called the best round he’s ever seen from her, backing up Gilooly with a 44. Alexander Axt and seventh-grader Owen Potropulos rounded out the scoring with a 46 apiece.

“You can imagine the nerves for Owen teeing off as a seventh grader against guys who were four or five years older than him,” Spooner said. “He birdied the third hole (a 181-yard par-3) and stayed consistent from there.”

Spooner said of the 12 golfers he had on the course, counting the JV, each finished at 55 or below, and the 172 team score was a 10-stroke improvement from Mount Greylock’s score in last year’s season-opener.

Mount Everett was led by Cooper Rothvoss, who carded a 47. Tucker Wilkinson finished at 49 for the Eagles.

Mount Everett goes to Lee next Wednesday.

Mount Greylock travels to Adams to face Hoosac Valley on Thursday.
