Wahconah Hockey Team Holds Off Mount Everett Comeback Bid
SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Mike Moreno scored two goals and added an assist as the Wahconah hockey team held off a Mount Everett third-period rally to win, 5-3, on Tuesday night.
Brendan Dempsey scored twice off assists from Jake Corcoran in the third to bring the Eagles back from a 4-1 deficit to within a goal with 10 minutes left.
"I was very happy to see how the team came out in the third period," Mount Everett coach Aidan Gilligan said. "We were down by three to a very good team and battled back."
But Wahconah's defense stiffined, and Moreno scored an empty-netter with five seconds left to provide the final margin.
Corcoran scored the game's first goal to give Mount Everett a lead 5 minutes, 1 second into the game.
But Wahconah scored four straight, getting tallies from Nate Lapine, Moreno, Andrew Beaudoin and Josh Pettit to take a three-goal lead into the third.
Jonah Swotes stopped 41 shots in the loss. Cole Seaman made 27 saves to earn the win for Wahconah.
Mount Everett hosts Newtown, Conn., on Friday. Wahconah travels to face Taconic on Saturday.
