NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Wahconah hockey team defeated St. Mary’s Wednesday evening, 6-1, at Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Rink.

Wahconah moved the puck well, which is something Coach Don Disbrow said they’ve been working on.

“Everything we’ve worked on these past couple of practices, they went out and executed,” Disbrow said. “That’s been a problem for us all season, what we’ve worked on in practice wasn’t being carried over to the games.”

“This is the first game they went out and were able to execute a lot of the things we’ve been talking about and working on.”

Three minutes into the first period, Wahconah got its first goal after a scramble in front of the net; Dan Flynn lit the lamp with Nate Lapine and Andrew Beaudoin providing the assists.

St. Mary’s came back at Wahconah three minutes later, tying it with a shot from outside from Jared Rodgers, leaving the score at 1-1 going into the second period.

Wahconah came out in the second period and put in three more goals to take a 4-1 lead after two periods of play. The first came from Flynn 4:03 in, assisted by Lapine and Henry Churchill. At 6:31, Sean Davis sent the puck to Jeff Hancock, and with 0:41 left on the clock, Lapine finished one in the net from Beaudoin.

“The puck movement was good, we supported each other, our forcheck and cycling was much better than it’s ever been,” Disbrow said. “Everything  tonight was better than it’s been all season.”

Flynn recorded his third goal of the evening seven minutes into the third period, earning a hat trick and giving Wahconah a 5-1 lead with eight minutes of play remaining.

Wahconah’s final goal of the evening came with 5:49 left on the clock. Mike Bloom sent the puck to Aubrey Rumbolt, who took a shot from outside and hit the back of the net.

“Quite frankly, we went from probably one of our worst games of the year to our best game of the year tonight,” Disbrow said. “We played a puck possession game from a defensive side of it and we really used each other for support and skated with the puck and looked up ice for our forwards much better tonight.”

Wahconah takes on West Springfield Saturday evening at the Boys and Girls Club. Disbrow hopes his team can carry over the same intensity and execution that it did Wednesday evening.
