Wahconah's Shippee Wins Discus at Niskayuna, N.Y., Meet

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. -- Wahconah senior Payton Shippee Saturday set a Berkshire County record in winning the discus at the Niskayuna Spring Classic.

 

Shippee recorded a throw of 163 feet, 4 inches on his fourth of six attempts.

 

His mark of 160 feet on his third throw also would have won the event by 7 and a half feet.

 

Shippee also placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 44-8.

 

Student-athletes from Pittsfield, Monument Mountain and Mount Greylock joined Wahconah in the vacation week trek to New York's Capital District.

 

Shippee was the lone individual champion from the county at the regional meet, but there were several podium finishes for local athletes on the day.

 

Monument Mountain's Lily Haskins-Vaughan placed second in the high jump, clearing 5-2. The Spartans' Oliver Berkowitz was second in the long jump after sailing 21-5.25.

 

Mount Greylock's Katherine Goss finished second in the 100 meter hurdles and third in the 400 hurdles. The Mounties' Maggie Nichols was fifth in the 100 dash and seventh in the 200.

 

They helped Mount Greylock post the top team finish among the county schools. The Mounties finished eighth out of 29 girls teams at the event.

 

Shippee and the Wahconah boys placed 17th out 27 teams earning points.
