Wahconah Unified Squad Second at State Championship

NATICK, Mass. -- The Wahconah Unified team Wednesday placed second in the Mixed Division 1-5 group at the State Championships.

 

"In every direction the best of what high school athletics is about was on display," Wahconah coach Jared Shannon said of the event. "Great sportsmanship, teams supporting each other, kids trying their very best and a great crowd cheering them on. 

 

"I am very proud of our team and am lucky to be their coach. They are all wonderful people and have worked so hard all year to get better as athletes while being exceptional teammates." 

 

Colton Jennings won his group in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 44.16 seconds for the Western Massachusetts Champions.

 

Jaxxon Hand won the Division 1-4 long jump (7 feet, 4 inches).

 

In the Division 1-5 long jump, Wahconah's Olive Klinedinst (9-0) and Ava Irene (8-9) placed first and second, respectively.

 

"For the first time in program history we medaled in a relay by taking fourth in the 4-by-400 with Sammie Iovieno, Christian Schmitt, Brodie Kaley and Colton Jennings," Shannon noted.

 

Ethan Cowell was third in the shot put (16-0). Preston Lannan was second in his shot put group with a throw of 31-8.

 

Gianna Moreschi was third in the 400 meters (1:46.96). Alex Washburn also picked up a third place, finishing in 1:20.

 

Anthony Reed took a silver in the long jump with a mark of 9-4.5.

 

Caleb Ryan was second in the 400 meters in his division, clocking a time of 1:46.96.

 

Athletes from Mount Greylock also competed at the state meet.

 

Daniel Lawson Jr. finished second in his division in the shot put with a mark of 19-7.

 

Cole Narey took a bronze in the 100 dash (39.13).

 

Mount Greylock's athletes placed 10th in the Mixed Division 2-3 group.

 

"It was so great to see our friends from all over the state again this year as well as our good friends from the West," Shannon said. "Mount Greylock made their first trip to states this year. We also saw Holyoke, Westfield, Palmer, Chicopee and Chicopee Comp."

 

Perhaps the most difficult prize at any Unified Sports event, the sportsmanship award, went to the teams from Auburn, Dartmouth and Newton South.
