Krejmas Leads Wahconah Past Mount Greylock
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Kassidy Krejmas had 10 kills, six aces and six blocks in a dominating performance as the Wahconah volleyball team came back from a first set loss to earn a four-set win at Mount Greylock on Thursday.
Kaylee O'Bryan had 17 assists and five kills for Wahconah, which prevailed, 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-14.
Time and again, Krejmas came up big on the front line, providing big points in key runs throughout the second through fourth sets.
"It's not only the kills that she's getting," Wahconah coach Dave Lussier said. "It's the presence of the blocking that's also helping us out.
"And I think that we were able to spread the offense around a little bit to where we were geting kills from other players, too. So it wasn't all from Kassidy. Some of her kills were on overpasses from their side, too, so she's playing really well at the net."
Mount Greylock got a big service run from Alyssa Phelps to establish a lead in the first set.
She got the ball with the game tied, 3-3, and gave it up with the Mounties ahead, 8-4 -- notching several of her team-high six aces along the way.
Mount Greylock never relinquished that lead and put the set away when Wahconah failed to return an attack by Lucy Shepard (six kills).
In the second set, a five-point run on Krejmas' serve established a 9-2 lead for Wahconah. Later in the set, she had a block and an ace during a three-point run by Hannah Rose that put the set out of reach at 20-7.
In the third set, Wahconah's Gabrielle Frydel had the key service run, taking the ball with the set tied 13-13 and giving her team a 20-13 lead -- a run that featured three kills and a block by Krejmas.
Jordyn Gagliardi did the honors on the service line in the fourth set for Wahconah. She notched three aces in a six-point run that pushed the lead to 14-4. Rose, who served more points than anyone for Wahconah, 15, served four in a row late in the set to take her team's lead to 22-8.
Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer was encouraged that his team did not quit in the face of that big deficit, getting small runs by Emma Hayward and Phelps to stay alive before succumbing on a service error for match point.
"This is a new team," Geyer said. "We had eight seniors last year. They're starting to jell. I'm really proud of how hard they're working. They came together, even when we were behind, they came back.
"And Wahconah's a really good serving team. Wahconah is looking really strong this year. They've got Kaylee setting and hitting. They've got good middles who we couldn't stop. So hats off to them."
Lussier likewise had praise for the Mounties and was pleased to see his squad pick up its first win over Mount Greylock in a few years.
"Greylock is a well coached team," he said. "This was big for us to get this under our belt. We still have things to work on, but we're pretty happy with how we performed today."
Takeira Darrow had a team-high seven kills and 10 digs for Mount Greylock, which hosts Taconic on Monday.
Wahconah (3-1) hosts Monument Mountain on Monday.
