Mount Greylock Girls Win State Title
WRENTHAM, Mass. -- Jacqueline Wells finished in 14th place to lead the Mount Greylock girls cross country team to a Division 2 State Championship on Saturday.
Wells covered the 5-kilometer course in 19 minuts, 2 seconds, the fastest time for a Berkshire County finisher at the event.
The Mounties finished with 87 points, easily outpointing runner-up Nauset, which finished with 125, edging out Lenox (126 points) for second.
The individual title went to Littleton's Sarah Roffman, who crossed the finish line in 18:12, a solid 14 seconds ahead of the field.
But Mount Greylock finished atop the team podium thanks to Jackie Wells, her sister Lily (19:41), Josie Smith (19:57), Helen Greenfield (20:09) and Hazel Scullin (20:22). Also competing, but not figuring into the team score, were Miriam Bakija (20:29) and Kate Swann (20:43), who both finished in the top 70 out of 178 finishers at the event.
Lenox was led by Ellen Huth in 17th place in a time of 19:27. The Millionaires also scored times from Ava Bachman, Marion Huth and Alice Najimy.
Monument Mountain's Grace Phair, running as an individual, finished 48th with a time of 20:23.
Mount Greylock's boys placed seventh out of 20 teams in Division 2, compiling 227 points. Parker Christian Essential was the team champion with 90 points, and Newburyport's Sam Acquaviva was the top D2 boy, coming home in 15:59.
Mount Greylock's top finisher was Jesse Seid, who placed 18th with a time of 16:46.
Mount Greylock's Jacob Fink, Josh Cheung, Sam Culver and Theo Sandstrom all pointed.
Lenox's boys placed 15th in D2 with 360 points. The MIllionaires were led by Ted Yee, who placed 54th in 17:22. Lenox also scored times from Ryan Silverstein, Colin Young, Renzo Vargas and Maxime Leger.
Monument Mountain's Peter LaRochelle ran as an individual, finishing in 18:29.
In Division 1, Pittsfield's Amin Purry placed 94th with a time of 17:03, and Taconic's Jacob Paris was 103rd in 17:08. The D1 boys title was won by Tristan Shelgren of Saint John's Prep in 15:16.
The D1 girls state champion is Natick's Grace Connolly, who finished in 17:50.
Taconic's Mary Hayes (20:40) and Wahconah's Haley Crosier (20:43), Danielle Orlando and Gabrielle Orlando competed as individuals.
