Hoosac Girls Fifth at Western Mass

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Cori Ghidotti finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Hoosac Valley girls swimming team to a fifth-place finish at the Western Massachusetts championships on Sunday at Springfield College.
 
The Hurricanes, a cooperative team that includes students from Drury and Mount Greylock that went undefeated in the dual meet season, posted podium finishes in all three relays on the way to compiling 188 team points. Northampton won the event with 312 points, and Amherst finished sixth, just behind Hoosac, with 169.
 
In the boys meet, Taconic's George Sommerville finished second in the 50 freestyle. His time of 22.17 seconds was nine one-hundredths of a second behind Westfield's Jimmy Steinhart. Sommerville was also third in the 100 butterfly.
 
Ghidotti swam the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 8.85 seconds, finishing behind Longmeadow's Jerrica Li (1:06.07). Liz Bernardy placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.47).
 
Ghidotti, Ellie Field, Alyssa Bush and Emma Whitney teamed up to finish third in the 200 medley relay, an event won by Northampton in 1:53.69. Hoosac finished in 1:55.55, just ahead of Monument Mountain (1:55.77) in fourth.
 
Hoosac finished fourth in the 200 free relay (Lisa Bernardy, Ghidotti, Michaella Vecchiarelli and Emma Whitney) in 1:45.80 and sixth in the 400 free relay (Bernardy, Bush, Field and Julia Whitney).
 
Field finished sixth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 200 free. Emma Whitney was ninth in the 100 back.
 
Monument's Maeve Wilber was fourth in that backstroke and also finished third in the 200 individual medley while helping the Spartans finish fourth in the 400 FR and the 200 MR.
 
St. Joseph's Jessie Tobin finished third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 500 free.
 
Monument's William Palmer was fourth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. Brandon Louison was fifth in the 100 back and sixth in the 100 fly for the Spartans, who finished seventh in the team competition.
