County Athletes Earn Crowns on First Day of D6 State Meet
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The first day of the Division 6 State Track and Field Championships saw Berkshire County take home four individual titles from Merrimack College.
Mount Greylock’s Maggie Nichols and Quinn McDermott each won a championship.
Nichols took the 200 meters with a victory by one one-hundredth of a second in the final.
McDermontt won the 800 metrs by just .16 seconds.
Monument Mountain’s Amelia Desilets won the 2-mile run in 11:14.65, one of many personal records for county athletes on Day 1 of a meet that concludes on Saturday.
In the field, Hoosac Valley’s Taylor Garabedian took first with a throw of 108 feet, 1 inch in the discus. County rivals Lily Catelotti and Talia Kapiloff also medaled, placing second and seventh, respectively.
Heading into Saturday’s second and final day of competition, Mount Greylock’s girls are in first place with 39 points to Hamilton-Wenham’s 27. Eight of 19 girls events were decided on Thursday.
The top boys team from the county after Day 1 is Wahconah, in seventh place with 11 points. Mount Greylock is right behind, tied for eighth with 10 points. Amesbury leads the boys competition with 43 points.
Wahconah’s boys on Thursday were led by Payton Shippee, with a second-place finish in the discus, and Liam Furlong, who placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles.
