Matthews, Millionaires Open with Wins

LEE, Mass. – The reigning state champions from Lenox got their season off on the right foot Wednesday with a pair of dual meet wins at Lee High School.

 

Benjamin Harwood placed second overall to lead four Millionaires in the top five as Lenox beat Monument Mountain and the host Wildcats on opening day of the county season.

 

Everett Pacheco of Monument Mountain was the first boy across the finish line, finishing in 13 minutes, 46.32 seconds, about 28 seconds ahead of Harwood.

 

Pacheco and the Spartans picked up dual meet wins over Lee and Pittsfield.

 

The Generals, paced by ninth-place finisher David Bernal, defeated Hoosac Valley and Lee.

 

Pittsfield’s girls had a 3-0 day after edging Monument Mountain by just four points behind a first-place finish from Yasmine Oubtrou.

 

She came home in 17:48.16, 13 seconds ahead of the Spartans’ Rae Geddes in second place.

 

Five Lenox girls finished in the top 10, led by Elyssa Scrimo in third place, as the Millionaires beat Monument Mountain and the host Wildcats.

 

Geddes and the Spartans also beat Lee, which got a top 10 finish from Kira Johnson, who placed ninth on her home course.

 

Hoosac Valley’s best finisher on Wednesday was Taylor Garabedian, who finished in 14th place.

 

Next week, Lenox will be home, where it will be joined by Lee and Hoosac Valley. Monument Mountain and Pittsfield will run at Berkshire Community College next Wednesday.
