Hurricanes' Ciempa, Mounties' Smith Win at Hoosac Valley
CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Home is pretty sweet for Hoosac Valley harrier Travis Ciempa.
But Tuesday's run was a little bitter sweet for the Hurricanes senior.
"Most people don't like the course, but I love Hoosac because it's our home course," Ciempa said after coming in first in five-team competition on Wednesday. "And I like the hills because we do a lot of hill work in practice.
"I'm looking forward to Western Mass, individuals, states, hopefully. It's bittersweet, though, because it's senior year. I'll miss it."
The Hurricanes are scheduled to run on the road the final two Wednesdays of the regular season -- at Pittsfield next week and at Taconic on Oct. 22.
Ciempa made the most of his last two runs on the home course. Last time out, he set a course record. On Wednesday, in wetter conditions, he was not quite that fast but he was faster than anyone else, leading three Hurricanes in the top four.
On the girls side, the Hurricanes had four in the top six, but Mount Greylock's Margo Smith took first place.
Mount Greylock's and Hoosac Valley's boys and girls teams each cruised to dual-meet victories by comfortable margins.
Hoosac's girls defated Lee and Mount Everett. Mount Greylock's girls beat Mount Everett and Pittsfield. Pittsfield defeated Lee in the day's other girls dual.
Hoosac Valley's boys team was a double winner, beating Lee and Mount Everett. Pittsfield topped Lee, and Mount Greylock beat Mount Everett in the day's other dual meets.
Final times were not available on Wednesday evening.
