Dews Wins State Championship

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – West Dews earned a 13-10 decision in the title bout at 144 pounds Saturday to claim a Division 3 State Championship.
 
Dews, a senior at Wahconah Regional High School who wrestles on the Taconic coop team, beat Hampshire’s Adin Clifford to capture Berkshire County’s only title at the three-day meet.
 
On Saturday morning, Dews earned his third pin of the tournament when he stopped Triton’s Samuel Imlach early in the second period.
 
Two of the county’s other semi-finalists also won in the semi-finals to make it to their respective title matches.
 
Mount Everett’s Diego Cruz earned an 8-0 major decision in the final four to reach a title bout against Tewksbury’s Jack Lightfoot, who won the 113-pound crown with a 7-2 decision.
 
Cruz’s teammate, Connor Lupiani, reached the final at 138 pounds with a 9-4 win on Saturday morning. But Pentucket’s Tanner Kamuda earned a pin in the second period of their final.
 
Mount Everett’s Max Manning also medaled, winning the seventh-place match at 144 pounds, as the Eagles collected 52 points to finish 14th in the 53-team field, the best showing of any Berkshire County squad.
 
Monument Mountain placed 21st with three podium finishes. Sam St. Peter bounced back from Friday’s loss to finish third in the 285-pound division, finishing the meet with a 29-second pin of Lynnfield’s Dylan Mathews. Christopher St. Peter (106) and Kamren Boino (150) placed sixth and eighth, respectively.
 
Mount Greylock placed 26th in the state. Logan O’Connell, who was pinned in the first round of his semi-final on Saturday morning, ended up sixth at 215 pounds.
 
Jayquan Vazquez (190) and Jacob Borawski (175) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
