Taconic's Duhamel, McCann Win State Titles
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- Taconic's Mitch McCann and Mya Duhamel Sunday won individual State Bowling Championships at Cove Lanes.
McCann defeated Dylan Goral of St. John's (Shrewsbury), 193-172, in the finals.
Duhamel rolled a 191 in the girls final to beat McCann Tech's Meghan Mongeon by 53 pins.
Earlier in the day, it was Duhamel chasing Mongeon after the Hornet rolled a three-game series of 596 to finish first among all the girls competing in the preliminary round.
Six Berkshire County girls grabbed spots in the eight-player semi-finals, where Mongeon again led the pack with a 187 to grab the top seed going into match play.
After Lee's Emily Holian, who was fourth after the semis, defeated third-place Jessica Swenson of Doherty, 182-170, in the first head-to-head match, Duhamel beat Holian, 202-185, to earn a spot in the championshp match.
There, the top girl in the Berkshire County League this season with an average of 193, prevailed to take home the hardware.
Her teammate, McCann, was the top boy coming out of the preliminaries on Sunday morning, rolling games of 217, 257 and 205 -- the only boy to go over 200 three times -- to finish with a 679 series that was 21 pins ahead of the field.
Goral, who was second after the prelims, bounced back with a 232 in the semifinals to earn the top seed going into the matches.
McCann still broke 200 with a 203 to finish with the No. 2 seed.
Chicopee Comp's Donald Barrows beat Pittsfield's Matt Dupuis in the first boys match of the playoffs, 200-175.
McCann then eliminated Barrows, 199-169, to earn a shot at Goral.
The high school bowling season comes to a close on Friday when the team championship is decided at Cove in a tournament delayed by one week due to this weekend's snow.
