Taconic's Poirier, Healey Alive at State Wrestling Championships
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Two Taconic wrestlers Friday advanced to the championship semi-finals at the Division 3 State Championship meet.
At 152 pounds, Noah Poirier started his day with an 18-2 technical fall over Tri-County's Cole King in the round of 16.
In the state quarter-finals, Poirier outpointed Scituate's David Murphy, 8-4.
Next up for Poirier is Wayland's Greg Deeley in the round of four.
Taconic's Broc Healey advanced to the final four at 160 pounds.
Healey won a high-scoring, 24-17, decision over Norton's Nathan Tripolone in their opener on Friday morning.
Healey then pinnned Danvers' Joseph Baker in the round of eight.
Healey Saturday morning will face Foxborough's Maxwell Kornbluth in the state semi-finals.
Taconic starts Day 2 at the state tournament in 15th place with 26.5 points. Tewksbury is atop the leaderboard with 54.5 points.
Berkshire County's contingent at Game On Fitchburg still has five wrestlers alive in the consolation brackets.
Monument Mountain's Colin Kinne (113 pounds) and Ely Cormier (126) each are alive for a third-place finish.
Kinne pinned Tewksbury's Benjamin Barrasso in the round of 16 but was stopped by Middleborough's Matthew Patterson with a 17-0 technical fall in the quarters. Kinne bounced back to earn a 6-4 decision against Taconic's West Dews in the wrestlebacks.
Cormier also opened with a win, pinning Canton's Max Kupferman on Friday morning. But the Spartan's bid for a title ended with a pin by Wilmington's Luke Vitale in the quarters. Cormier then pinned Wakefield's Andrew Valley in his first consolation bracket bout.
Mount Everett is tied with Monument Mountain in 31st place with 14 points apiece.
Eagles Connor Lupiani (113) and Tyler Candelari (126) each are alive in the consolation bracket.
Candelari is due Saturday to face Monument Mountain's Cormier in the consies.
Candelari Friday beat Tri-County's Tyler McKinnon, 12-6, before being pinned by Foxborough's James Fraser. Candelari then beat Holliston's Matthew Amante, 7-1, in the wrestlebacks.
Lupiani edged Melrose's Michael Thomas, 15-13, in the round of 16 but was pinned by Pembroke's Liam Pritchard-Holland in the quarter-finals. In the consolation bracket, Lupiani earned a second-period pin against Canton's Yuril Leskiv.
One Mount Greylock wrestler remains alive for a third-place finish.
Aidan Macpherson at 170 pounds was pinned in his opener on Friday but came back with a pin of Tewksbury's Sean Hirtle. Macpherson then advanced by forfeit to Saturday's competition.
