Mount Greylock Battles Rain, Notches Win No. 1
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Tommy Art called his shot, and the Mount Greylock golf team opened the season with a convincing win over Mount Everett at Waubeeka.
“It was about 200 to the pin, but I had to take a little bit more club because it’s so wet, so I hit my 3 iron and left it just short of the green,” Art said of his second shot on the par-5 eighth hole. “But it was sitting up pretty nicely.
“On the walk up to the green, I was talking to Owen [Petropulos] and said, ‘I’m gonna chip this in for you.’ And then, I got lucky.”
Art found the bottom of the cup to record the day’s only eagle and help him finish at 43 for the Mounties, who won, 170-212.
His teammate in the first foursome, Petropulos, earned medalist honors with a 39 for the 2022 Western Massachusetts Division 3 runners up.
Ben Dingman (40) and Jacob Hillman (48) rounded out the scoring for Mount Greylock. Simon Fife led the Eagles with a 48.
Art’s eagle came in the middle of a solid finishing three holes that began with a par on the par-3 seventh and ended with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.
“It felt really good because the start of the round was really tough,” Art said. “A couple of sixes in there. But 43 in this weather – I’ll take it.”
Petropulos likewise will take a three-over round on a day that had the golfers reaching for their umbrellas as often as their drivers.
It was a nice start to the fall for the Mounties senior, who capitalized on his familiarity with the course.
“This is my sixth and last year, so I’ve got plenty of experience,” said Petropulos, who split his time over the summer between Waubeeka and Taconic Golf Club. “I’ve played this course so many times and know it really well. I just feel comfortable here.”
Petropulos notched birdies on the par-5 fourth hole and the par-4 sixth. Hillman carded a birdie on No. 8.
Mount Everett will look to get its first win of the season on Thursday when it makes the short trip to Wyantenuck to play Monument Mountain.
Mount Greylock heads south on Thursday for a showdown with 2022 Western Mass D3 Champion Lenox.
“It’s pretty much a completely different course,” Petropulos said of the Millionaires’ home layout at Wyndhurst Golf Club. “A lot narrower, so you can’t miss right or left, or you’re in trouble – unlike here. But I still think we have a pretty solid team, so I’m pretty confident going into it. We’ll see.”
Mount Greylock: Owen Petropulos, 39; Ben Dingman, 40; Tommy Art, 43; Jacob Hillman, 48; Will Svrluga, 50; Max Wied, 63.
Mount Everett: Simon Fife, 48; Gabe Fahey, 51; Levi Martin, 55; Finn Vion, 58; Chet Schur, 66, David Batista Santos, 68.
