Franklin Tech Edges McCann Golfers on Tie-Breaker
ADAMS, Mass. -- McCann Tech’s Ryan Baran rode a strong start to earn co-medalist honors in Wednesday’s season opener at Forest Park Country Club, but the Hornets dropped a heart-breaker to Franklin Tech in a match decided on a tie-breaker.
Baran parred the first three holes en route to a 45 on the par-34 layout. That was good enough to tie the Eagles’ Travis Cutting and Hunter Session.
And Baran’s 4-0 win against Franklin Tech’s Mike Patnode helped the Hornets split the match points, 12-12, sending the match to a tie-breaker: comparing the four low scores for each team. In that area, Franklin Tech earned a 187-191 edge and the 13-12 match win.
“It was a tough loss, but I know our guys will bounce back,” McCann Tech coach Justin Kratz said.
McCann (0-1) picked up one other match win, at No. 6, where Chris Rose defeated Jacob Shaw, 3-1.
The teams halved the match at No. 3 behind a 47 from Dalton Tatro. Cutting, Mike McGoldrick and Session each earned a 3-1 win for the Eagles.
Baran said the persistent rain in the second half of the match was a challenge.
“It was a little wet today,” he said with a smile. “I had a waterproof jacket, and I was getting wet underneath, but I didn't play too bad.
“The first four holes, I did well, but after that, I had a rough time because it started to rain harder. I parred 1, 2 and 3. I hit the ball off the tee fairly well down the middle, so that helped me.”
Cole Kratz finished one stroke off the pace for medalist honors, finishing with a 46 in his match against Cutting.
McCann Tech hosts Pathfinder on Tuesday.
