McCann Tech Harriers Show Spirit, Improvement
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech cross country team Tuesday celebrated Senior Day with one eye on the Class of 2017 and one eye on the future of a program that is building for the future.
“They're coming together really well as a group,” McCann coach Eileen Monyhan said after a meet against Mahar and St. Mary’s of Westfield at Windsor Lake. “It was really hard for them at the beginning of the season. We lost so many seniors last year. They didn't know how that was going to play out.
“But today, watching as the last couple of girls came in, the entire team cheering them on, it was really great. It was great how they've come together.”
The Mahar boys and St. Mary’s girls dominated the tops of their respective races.
Ash Shaw won the boys race in 18 minutes, 57 seconds and was followed across the finish line by four of his teammates. On the girls side, Allison Rougemont of St. Mary’s was the winner in 23:13, followed by Mahar’s Shey Gadwah (23:43) and Rougemont’s teammate, Casey Rutledge (25:24).
For McCann, Hope Blake was third in 25:28. Hannah Blake (25:32), Dakoda Hurley (29:19) and Darcy Scalise (30:52) were sixth, seventh and eighth. The Hornets won the girls race, 26-29; Mahar did not have enough girls to score.
“Dakoda took 10 minutes off her [personal best],” Monyahan said. “The girls have had some injuries and some medical issues. This was Hannah’s first time running the full course this year, and she was 28:12. She came in second for us right behind her twin sister. That was great to see.”
McCann’s boys were led by Seth Ivas (20:09) in seventh place. Jaden Harley (21:09), Avery Raschdorf (22:02) and John Daub (23:16) were 10th, 11th and 12th.
Mahar's boys topped McCann, 15-43. The Hornets beat St. Mary's boys, 20-37.
“It's a really young team, so I think they're going to do phenomenal,” Monyahan said.
“Our first runner, Seth, is a freshman, and he did 20:09. He blew away our senior, who is one of our fastest runners, at his senior meet. We have a lot of freshmen, and I think the team is just going to keep getting stronger.”
