NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Tech is adding a boys lacrosse team this spring after losing out on its opportunity to be a guest in a cooperative team.

“We found out about a month ago,” McCann athletic director Robert Guettler said of the decision that St. Joseph Central School would stop hosting a coop and instead join with Taconic High School.

And when Guettler posted a sign-up sheet to gauge interest in creating McCann’s own team, more than 20 students put their names down.

“We’re just going to go for it,” he said on Friday. “We felt like in the spring, the only sport we offered was baseball, and we felt we wanted another option, and that was the one that was viable.”

This spring, the Hornets are going to play an independent schedule made up of opponents from the Berkshire County League and the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

Guettler said he already has contacted a few of his fellow ADs and expects to contact more at next week’s PVIAC AD meeting.

“We’ve got three or four schools lined up already,” he said.

With players and potential opponents, all McCann needs are uniforms, a field and someone to coach the team. Guettler said all three are in the works.

On Friday, he posted an announcement seeking a coach. The team is probably going to use the school’s soccer field.

And the gear?

“We’ve got prices on all of it, and we’re prepared to go ahead with an order,” Guettler said. “It doesn’t take that long to get this stuff in.”
