McCann Runners Show Speed, Sportsmanship at Tri-Meet
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The McCann Tech cross country team competed against Putnam on Wednesday on a challenging and confusing 3.1-mile course in a meet that included Granby as well.
Many runners from Granby and McCann lost time due wrong turns, but the harriers all rallied and ran hard.
Placing first overall for the boys again was McCann's Jerry McCarthy with a time of 19 minutes, 49 seconds. he was followed by Lukas Yelle with a time of 20:21 and Cory Hartly with a time of 21:58, despite being one of the runners delayed by a wrong turn.
Finishing strong for the girls, was McCarthy's stepsister, Aubrey Tetlow, placing second overall with a time of 26:01.
Coach Eileen Monyahan said that as impressed as she with her runners and their performance, their sportsmanship is what she is most proud of. Girls captain Rosalyn Lincoln had set a goal for herself before the race - but when a runner from another school tripped and fell hard down an embankment, Rosalyn instantly stopped, ran back and helped the girl, making sure she was ok before continuing with her own race.
"Cross Country is an amazing sport in that the running is individual and the competition can be fierce but the support runners give each other is always outstanding," Monyahan said.
