McCann Tech Runs in First Home Meet of Season

ADAMS, Mass. – The Frontier boys and girls cross country teams earned convincing wins over McCann Tech and Hopkins Academy on Tuesday at the Greylock Glen.

 

Luke Howard and Evan Hedlund finished 1-2 for Frontier in the boys race, each crossing the line in 20 minutes, 13 seconds.

 

Frontier took the top four places before Hopkins’ Jack Cycz placed fifth in 21:02.

 

McCann Tech’s Tucker Wirtes cracked the top 10, placing eighth in 23:46.

 

In the girls race, Frontier took six of the first eight places, led by Sylvia DiBartolomeo in 21:56.

 

Caprial DiBartolomeo, who runs for Hopkins Academy, was second in 22:35.

 

McCann Tech’s Camryn Moran led the Hornets, finishing ninth in 25:10.

 

Hornets coach Bryana Malloy knew that Frontier would present a challenge in both races, but she was happy with the effort she got out of her small cohort of harriers.

 

“We lost seven seniors from last year,” Malloy said. “So we’ve got some fresh legs. We have seven girls and five boys.

 

“We’ve seen a lot of growth already this season. Just a really dedicated team. I’m proud of them with their placements and times today.”

 

The McCann Tech girls did beat Hopkins girls, who had the second and third runners but only four finishers, not enough for a team score.

 

After Moran, the Hornets girls had a tight group of finishers with Kamilia Kondel, Julia Vareschi and Lillie Bellows placing 12th, 14th and 15th, respectively.

 

The McCann Tech boys got a 14th-place finish from Noah Kanelos that was sixth in the dual meet with Hopkins, helping the Hornets get within a baker’s dozen of the Golden Hawks, who won, 32-18.

 

McCann Tech next Tuesday goes to Mohawk Trail before hosting its second and final home meet on Oct. 8 against Pioneer Valley.
