Delisle Hat Trick Leads Hornets Past Mount Everett
SHEFFIELD, Mass. – David Delisle had a hat trick, Abby Fuls made 19 saves, and the McCann Tech hockey team started 2023 with a 6-1 win over Mount Everett on Monday night at the Berkshire School.
Both the Hornets and the Eagles were coming off extended holiday breaks.
Mount Everett had not played since Dec. 22. McCann Tech’s last game was Dec. 21.
McCann Tech coach Mathew Parise was pleased with the progress his team made during the break.
“That was a long seven or eight days that we didn’t have any games, but we did practice every day, which was nice,” Parise said. “It just made a difference in us installing everything.
“We came out a little sluggish, like it was our first game. But I thought the third period we really played some good hockey – doing what we’ve been teaching and emphasizing.”
McCann Tech scored three goals in that third period, including back-to-back goals from Delisle in the 42nd minute to complete his hat trick.
He also scored the game’s first goal from the right-wing circle in the fifth minute to give the Hornets an early lead.
It stayed 1-0 until early in the second period, when defenseman Wesley Emerson threw the puck on net from the blue line, and it found its way into the goal.
“Good things happen when you put the puck on the net,” Parise said. “I think one of our goals bounced off the goalie’s skate and went into the net. But you’re working hard for it. … And if you’re not putting the puck on the net, you’re not getting a chance to score.
“I’ll take the lucky bounces, because you sure get enough against you at times. I’ll take the lucky bounces here and there.”
Midway through the second period, Nick Abuisi sent the puck toward the goal from behind the net, and it appeared to redirect off the Mount Everett keeper and across the line to make it 3-0.
Less than a minute later, the Eagles regrouped, and Nathaniel Von Ruden scored from high on the left wing on a delayed penalty to cut the deficit to two goals.
Mount Everett got the second of its two power play chances in the period with less than two minutes until intermission but could not find a way to again beat Fuls, who made 10 stops in the stanza.
“For some reason, we can’t seem to put pucks in the net right now,” said Mount Everett coach Jake King, whose Eagles (0-5) have just five goals this winter. “It’s something you need to win games, and we’ve got to figure that part out.
“We’re having some struggles, but we’re looking forward, looking ahead. It’s an every day thing. You can’t just look in the past. You have to come back and be a better person tomorrow, a better player. We can’t sulk on the losses, because that doesn’t help anybody.”
The third period started with Jameson Bayliss intercepting a Mount Everett clear in the left wing circle and centering the puck for Liam Noyes, who finished to put McCann Tech on top, 4-1.
Delisle closed things out with a pair of goals, the first on McCann Tech’s fourth power play try of the night for the Hornets’ first power play goal of the season.
“It was nice to see,” Parise said. “I thought our power play looked much better today. That was something we worked on this week in practice, and our possession in the zone was good. Our breakout was a lot better and cleaner.
“We’ve just got to get them to shoot a little bit more. We’ll get there.”
Hunter Shepardson, Bobby Baer and JJ Schneider Jr. split time in goal for the Eagles, combining to make 18 saves.
Mount Everett travels to Easthampton on Wednesday.
McCann Tech (2-4) hosts Southwick on Wednesday.
