Pittsfield's Purry, Wahconah's Orlando Lead Teams to Victory

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Pittsfield’s Amin Purry and Wahconah’s Danielle Orlando took first place in their respective races and led their respective teams to one-point victories on Wednesday at Reid Middle School.
 
Orlando covered the course in 22 minutes, 35 seconds and was followed across the line by teammate Haley Crosier as Wahconah earned 27 points to edge host PHS, 27-28.
 
In the boys race, the Generals edged city rival Taconic by the same 27-28 score.
 
Purry placed first in 18:44, nosing out Taconic’s Jacob Paris by two seconds.
 
Pittsfield’s Paul Wales, Steve Taglieri, Anthony Curcio  and Brian Brophy all scored and placed in the top 20 as Pittsfield won its only dual match of the afternoon.
 
Taconic’s boys earned a win over Hoosac Valley, which also fell to Wahconah.
 
Wahconah was led by P.J. Pharmer, who finished fourth in 19:18, the only runner not from Taconic or Pittsfield in the top 10. Hoosac did not have enough boys to post a team score, but Justin Levesque placed 48th overall in 26:07.
 
The girls competition featured a couple of nail-biters.
 
Wahconah’s Orlando and Crosier led the way in their duel with PHS, which was led by Cameron Diehl (23:40), Megan Francoeur and Emelyn Theriault, who placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
 
Wahconah’s other scorers were Gabrielle Orlando, Samantha Gladu and Madelyn Wendling.
 
Only two points separated Hoosac Valley’s and Taconic’s girls with Taconic coming out ahead, 27-29.
 
Mary Hayes led Taconic with a third-place finish, crossing the line in 23:10. Jamie Barthe (24:54) finished 10th to lead Hoosac Valley.
 
In the day’s third match, Wahconah beat Hoosac Valley, 17-40.
 
Girls team scores: Taconic 27, Hoosac Valley 29; Wahconah 17, Hoosac Valley 40; Wahconah 27, Pittsfield 28.
 
Boys team scores: Taconic 15, Hoosac Valley 50; Wahconah 15, Hoosac Valley 50; Pittsfield 27, Taconic 28.
