Mount Greylock Wrestlers Eighth After Day 1 at State Meet
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Mount Greylock Regional School's wrestling team is in eighth place with two wrestlers through to the semi-finals after one day of the Massachusetts Division 3 championships at Foxborough High School.
Travis Hilchey at 132 pounds and Johnny Colon at 182 each advanced to today's semis with a pair of wins and helped the Mounties compile 33.5 points, a point and a half ahead of ninth-place Tyngsborough.
Norton, which qualified wrestlers in 11 of 14 weight classes, appears to be the odds-on favorite to win the team title today when the meet concludes. Norton has 78.5 points to lead second-place Holliston (49.5); Norton also has six wrestlers alive in the main draw, more than any other school and two more than Holliston.
Colon can help slow Norton's march to the title on Saturday when he takes on the Lancers' Elliott Johnson in the semis.
Hilchey will face Pentucket's Josh Weslowski in the semi-finals.
Berkshire County has a total of four wrestlers still alive in the championship bracket.
In addition to Hilchey and Colon, Mount Everett's Bradley Lupiani (126) and Monument Mountain's Jonah Christianson (182) each will take to the mats on Saturday in the semis.
Christianson advanced with a first-round pin over Rockland's Bobby Gasdia and 5-3 decision over Wayland's Bailey Vespa in the quarters. Christianson will take Triton's Mark Boyle for a spot in the state final.
Lupiani beat Cohasset's Harry Helbock, 3-0, in the prelims and pinned Watertown's Daniel D'Amico in the quarters to reach today's semi-final against Somerset's Nate Pacheco.
At 132, Mount Greylock's Hilchey started his tournament with a major decision (12-0) over Quabbin's Mike O'Rourke and then beat Bristol-Plymouth/Coyle and Cassidy's Bryan Williams in the quarters.
Colon advanced with a pair of pins at 182. He pinned Cohasset's Hayes Keniley in 5 minutes, 51 seconds, and he needed just 1:56 to stop Marblehead Swampscott's Ali Atallah.
The county has two wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket of the tournament.
At 145, Mount Greylock's C.J. Lillie lost his preliminary bout but came back to get wins over Nauset's Dylan Kaeseleu (technical fall) and Cohasset's Nick Hall (pin) to reach the consolation semis.
Taconic's Dave Jones used a pair of pins in the wrestle-backs to reach today's consolation semi-finals at 220. He stopped Triton's Charlie Frauenfelder in 2:50 and Frontier's Saul Soto in 4:34.
Jones will face Saugus' Nick Vokey in the consolation semis.
