Athletes of the Week: Andrews & Tucker

Allexia Andrews
McCann Tech

The Hornets' leading scorer is a freshman, and their quarterback is a junior, but Monday was all about the seniors, and Allexia Andrews had a big day in a statement win. Andrews scored three goals as McCann Tech finished its regular season with authority, dominating Commerce, 8-0.

But Andrews and her senior teammates are not done yet. The Hornets, who have won three straight league titles, have a chance to win two more championships this fall. They open play in the State Vocational Tournament on Thursday. On Friday, they find out their seeding in the Western Massachusetts Division 4 tournament.

Devon Tucker
Pittsfield

When Pittsfield's senior quarterback was shaken up in the first quarter of a game for the city championship and a shot at the top seed in the upcoming Western Massachusetts Division 5 playoffs, there had to be some anxiety on the Generals' sideline.

And while Chad Shade's health is still a long-term concern, last Friday's game was in good hands: Devon Tucker rushed for "Madden-like" 376 yards and five touchdowns to lead Pittsfield past rival Taconic on Senior Night at Wahconah Park.

Tucker did it despite having to be helped off the field himself after twisting his ankle on a second-quarter touchdown. The Generals have one more regular season game — Friday at Amherst (1-6) — before heading into the post-season, likely with that No. 1 seed.

iBerkshires Sports and Capital Region Honda Dealers, including Bedard Honda in Cheshire, will be spotlighting two Berkshire County high school athletes each week, a boy and a girl, who best excelled in their sport or boosted their teams' efforts.
