Mount Greylock Loses in Five, Sees 32-Match Streak End

LUDLOW, Mass. – For the first time in about 22 months, the Mount Greylock volleyball team came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

 

Ludlow Wednesday earned a five-set win over the reigning Division 5 State Champions to stop a 32-match winning streak.

 

The last time Mount Greylock knew defeat was in the state title game in 2022.

 

After a close call against Lenox in its opener this fall, Mount Greylock won 18 of its next 20 sets and took a 7-0 record into Wednesday’s road game against the Lions.

 

The Mounties fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 in the match but came back both times to force a fifth set. 

 

In the end, Ludlow prevailed, 25-16, 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10.

 

“This year's team is learning and improving every match and our veterans who always step up really led tonight's multiple comebacks in a hard fought back and forth match,” Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer said. “I feel extremely privileged to be coaching these great athletes who are also amazing people.”

 

One of those veterans from last year’s 25-0 season, Kylie Sweren, had a double-double with 14 assists and 10 kills on Wednesday. She also served five aces.

 

Seniors Kelsey MacHaffie and Emily Alvarez, also key contributors in last fall’s run, contributed 11 kills and 28 digs, respectively.

 

Ninth-grader Olivia Perez finished the night with eight kills.

 

Mount Greylock will look to start another winning streak on Monday in the Mountie Dome when Wahconah pays a visit. Ironically, Wahconah was the first team to take on the Mounties in last year’s undefeated run.
