Strong Serving Lifts Thunder on Road
SHEFFIELD, Mass. – Alexis Phelps served eight aces and sparked the Taconic volleyball team to a big first-set comeback in a three-set win over Mount Everett on Thursday.
Janayah Jones served a team-high 13 aces and had a couple kills and a couple of digs in a 25-20, 25-7, 25-6 win for the Thunder.
Taconic coach Lance Fyfe said that the host Eagles played great defense that allowed them to take the lead early.
“Our hero in that first set, and I don’t usually like to give credit to one player, was Alexis Phelps,” Fyfe said. “She took us from a deficit of five points to a 24-19 lead with a serving run of eight aces out of 11 serves.”
Serving continued to be a key for Taconic in the latter sets, with Ella Stodden and Aliyah DelSonno each collecting six aces.
“The high number of aces cut back on our kill attempts on the net, but even with the limited number of swings our setters Ella Stodden and April Soasti did a great job of keeping Mount Everett guessing by setting seven of our hitters up for kills,” Fyfe said.
Taconic (2-0) hosts Holyoke on Monday.
Mount Everett (0-2) travels to Bennington, Vt., to play Mount Anthony on Friday.
