This week’s iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week have their teams surging as the regular season winds down.

Drury sophomore Jorge Bond leads the boys soccer team with 15 goals in 11 games this fall.

This week, he had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over Springfield Commerce and three goals and an assist in a 4-1 win over Renaissance on Friday.

Drury is 2-0-1 in its last three games to raise its record to 4-5-2 on the season with five games left – three on the schedule and two in either the Western Massachusetts tournament or its consolation rounds.

The Blue Devils ended the week as the 42nd ranked team in Division 5 in the latest MIAA in-season power rankings, so they likely will need to finish at least .500 to make the state tournament.

That quest continues on Wednesday when Drury visits Taconic and Friday with a rematch against city rival McCann Tech; the Blue Devils beat the Thunder, 3-2, the first time around and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Hornets.

The Taconic volleyball team already is in the Division 3 state tournament field, and Janayah Jones is one big reason why.

The Thunder senior leads the team in kills (98) and aces (63) this fall, and she has pulled up 105 digs, one of three members of the team in triple figures in that category.

This week, she registered six kills and served a team-high five aces in a win over rival Pittsfield on Monday. She followed that up with an 11-kill performance the next night against Mount Anthony Union and six more aces against Monument Mountain on Thursday – both Taconic wins.

The Thunder (11-4) will look to continue its three-match winning streak and improve its state ranking on Monday when it hosts Pittsfield for a rematch, the first of three matches this week to close the regular season.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
