Mount Greylock's Savage, Wahconah's Fyfe Earn All-State Recognition
It has been 14 years since the Massachusetts Volleyball Coaches Association has recognized a Berkshire County student-athlete with all-state designation.
This year, two local players received the honor.
Wahconah senior libero Sasha Fyfe and Mount Greylock senior outside hitter Celina Savage were named to the Division 3, 4 and 5 all-state team this week.
The pair are invited to participate in the MaVCA's All-Star Game on Monday, Nov. 20, at Westborough High School.
The 3/4/5 all-state team also includes Frontier's Caroline Deane and Amherst-Pelham's Liza Beigel.
Western Massachusetts was represented on the Division 2 All-State Team by Longmeadow's Skye Cerow.
According to records on the MaVCA website, the last Berkshire County player named to one of the all-state teams was then-Lee High senior and current Wildcats coach Julia Warner in 2009.
The selection of Fyfe and Savage to the all-state team means local fans will be denied a chance to see them suit up one more time in the county when the Berkshire Volleyball Showcase returns to Wahconah High on Monday.
The 6 p.m. event will feature players from all eight of the county's programs in an exhibition.
Many of those local student-athletes also will have one more chance to shine on Tuesday, Nov. 21, when the International Volleyball Hall of Fame hosts its annual Western Mass all-star game at 6 p.m. at Holyoke Community College.
Mount Greylock, which plays this weekend in the Division 5 State Championship Game, tied with Longmeadow for the most players selected to the regional event with five players apiece.
Wahconah and Lee each had four selections.
Local invitees to the Nov. 21 event in Holyoke include:
Lee: Juliana Schuerer, Karalynn Hopkins, Autumn Schwab, Alexis Masten.
Lenox: Kelsey Kirchner, Abby Winger.
Mount Greylock: Kylie Sweren, Celina Savage, Jackie Brannan, Julia DeChaine, Emily Mole.
Taconic: Natalia Dos Santos.
Wahconah: Eva Jacinto, Sasha Fyfe, Megan O'Bryan, Olivia Mason.
