Lenox Girls Roll Past Granby
LENOX, Mass. — The Lenox girls soccer team broke loose for five goals Tuesday in a shutout win over Granby.
These two teams met earlier in the season with Lenox (8-2) scraping by with a 3-2 win. This time the result was the same in the win-loss column, but the style in which Lenox went about the game was on a level that Granby couldn’t match.
From the opening kickoff Lenox looked like the hungrier and more dangerous side. The Millionaiers controlled the ball for a majority of the first half and peppered the Granby goal often. Lenox had a few good chances early but just couldn’t add the finishing touch.
As the game progressed, Granby sustained a small patch of possession after an onslaught from Lenox that warranted a timeout from Lenox head coach Brian Seminara just to regroup.
“We came out pretty hard in the beginning of the game, but Granby started to get a little momentum so I tried to take a timeout to break that up,” he said.
The timeout seemed to work as Lenox scored two goals within 3 minutes of each other to takea 2-0 lead. The goals were scored by Jenny Collins and Mary Elliot.
"I just reminded the girls to play our game and use our width," Seminara said. "And it looked like it paid off as soon as they came out.”
Lenox was able to tack on one more goal before half-time with a long distance strike from Molly Knight assisted by Solia Herndon-Shmid.
After the 3-0 lead going into the break Lenox continued to push the tempo and pin Granby back in their own half. In the 56th minute Lenox found another goal, this time Mary Elliot assisting teammate Jenny Collins for her second of the game.
The final goal of the game came from a beautifully worked free kick that Lenox headed past the keeper off the post. Fortunately for Lenox, Reeva Patel was all over the goal and tapped it in at the back post. They Millionaires cruised the rest of the way out and capped off an impressive shutout for their sixth straight win on the season.
“Down 3-0, teams get more aggressive and take chances so I tried to remind them to stay focused and watch more riskier balls played in," Seminara said. "I just told them to keep their foot on the gas and look for improvements on the little things we can do. I was also able to get some other girls in so it was a good night.”
Lenox will go for number seven in a row on Thursday against Northampton at home.
