Lenox, Mount Greylock Girls Battle to a Tie
LENOX, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock girls soccer team Thursday twice battled back from one-goal deficits, and Lenox keeper Sophie Patella made 22 saves in a 2-2 tie under the lights.
“Great intensity and energy from both teams in this game as it was a back and forth contest all night,” Lenox coach Kyle Zinchuk said. “I was very impressed with the resilience from Mt. Greylock to fight back and get an equalizer twice in the first half.”
Abby Schilling scored both goals from outside the 18 for the Millionaires, the first on an assist from Nicole Gamberoni in the 15th minute.
Fourteen minutes later, the Mounties were awarded a penalty kick, which Karen McComish converted to tie the score, 1-1.
Schilling scored again to put her team on top with about 10 minutes left in the half, but Lauren Howard scored an unassisted goal in the final minute of the half to tie it.
Patella and Mount Greylock’s Isabella Nicastro (12 saves) did not allow anything by them in the second half.
“At half-time we made some adjustments and I have to give a lot of credit to Paige Looney, who we tasked with marking [Madison] Ross in the second half, and Paige did a great job of limiting her chances,” Zinchuk said. “Sophie also had another great game in goal for us and bailed out the defense with some great saves in key moments. To Greylock's credit, Nicastro and the rest of their defense were able to shut down some good opportunities we had on the counter attack as well.”
Mount Greylock (5-2-1) hosts Hoosac Valley on Monday.
Lenox (3-4-2) hosts Taconic on Monday.
