Pittsfield, Lee, Wahconah Athletes Earn Weekly Honor
If it’s the end of October, that means it’s tournament time -- and this week’s iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week were either playing in the postseason or trying to get their team there.
The week began with Western Mass sectional tournaments for the region’s high school golfers.
Berkshire County was well represented at the top of the leaderboard in all three of the divisional sectionals.
On Monday at the Division 3 sectional, Lee’s Thomas Fraser carded a 77 to win medalist honors by two strokes over the field at The Orchards in South Hadley.
The next day, Wahconah’s Nate Dos Santos earned a four-stroke win on his home course at Cranwell in Lenox, where he finished at 3-over-par 75 in the Western Mass Division 2 meet.
And, for good measure, D1 golfer Michael Kays of Taconic posted a 75 at his sectional at Chicopee Country Club that was good enough to put him four-way tie for second place, just one stroke behind the medalist.
Fraser, Dos Santos and Kays will each be looking for another medal at his respective state tournament. Dos Santos will be joined by a fourth individual qualifier from the county, Mount Greylock's Benjamin Gilooly.
Pittsfield High senior Molly Tierney and the Generals’ girls soccer team are making a strong late push to their Western Mass sectional tourney.
Berkshire County Northern Division wins on Thursday and Saturday against Mount Greylock and Monument Mountain have put PHS in position to accomplish that goal in Monday’s regular season finale at Wahconah.
Tierney scored both goals in Pittsfield’s Thursday win over the Mounties. Her return to the lineup after starting the season with a broken bone in her forearm has helped Pittsfield go 4-3 in its last seven games.
“The last time we played [Mount Greylock], we didn't have Molly,” Pittsfield coach Andy Waluszko said, referring to an early season loss in Williamstown. “We still have a lot of injuries, but it was good that she got us going early.
“She was out for three weeks. She's still recovering, but it's good to get her back in the flow.”
