Wright Stuff: Pittsfield Girls Top Wahconah

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Pittsfield girls’ soccer team, now 4-2-1, walked away with a 2-0 win over Wahconah Monday afternoon at Kirvin Park.

Pittsfield’s defense and goalie, Allie Hunt dominated the back field; shutting out Wahconah on the few opportunities it had early in the second half.

“They had some opportunities, but Allie came up big today,” Pittsfield coach Andy Walusczko said. “Our four in the back played solid today.”

Pittsfield opened the scoring early in the first half off a cross from senior Trinity Cookis that slipped through Wahconah goalie Jamie Downer’s hands. Senior Amanda Wright was able to finish the ball, putting the Generals ahead 1-0.

Wahconah struggled to get the ball through Pittsfield’s defense in the first half. Its backline held strong and played far up, which created a lot of opportunities for the Pittsfield offense. The ball was played on its offensive side throughout the first half.

Pittsfield led 1-0 at half, and Wahconah came out looking to get that back in the beginning of the second, creating a lot more opportunities, but Hunt got her hands on everything.

“We brought people forward and tried to spread them out,” Wahconah coach Pat West said. “We concentrated on making the nice through pass or pass to feet and it worked for a while.”

Although Wahconah came out strong in the second, it wasn’t enough to stop the Generals. Wright added one more goal at the 30-minute mark; a beautiful shot from outside the 18 that was placed to the high far corner of the net, out of the Wahconah goalie's reach.

Wahconah had a chance at the end of the second half when an offensive player was able to beat the defender, but Hunt came out and was able to stop the break-away opportunity.

"We’ve been working on her to be more decisive and go out and get it,” Walusczko said. “And that stop was one of the keys, if she sat back in the goal they would have scored.”

Pittsfield had a few other chances to put the ball in the net in the end of the second half, but Wahconah’s defense was able to push the ball out and keep the score at 2-0.

Pittsfield will take on the Lenox Millionaires Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and Wahconah, now 6-2, will travel to Drury next Monday.
