Loehr, Ross Earn Athlete of the Week Honors
iBerkshires.com’s first individual honoree of the 2017-18 school year was quick to point out that his accomplishments were not his alone.
“Our line was really good,” Lee’s Lukas Loehr said after Friday’s 35-8 season-opening win over Turners Falls. “I credit them for a lot of our stuff. I don’t do anything and our other running backs don’t do anything without big holes -- so credit to them.”
Loehr and Mount Greylock’s Madison Ross are the year’s first iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week after successful weeks for each of their teams.
In Loehr’s case, the Wildcats took care of business against a rebuilding Turners Falls program, jumping out to a 28-0 half-time lead and going ahead by a 35-0 count before allowing a fourth-quarter score.
Loehr ran for 94 yards, scored three touchdowns and had an interception against the 2016 Western Massachusetts champions.
Ross and the Mount Greylock girls soccer team opened the season with two straight wins, the first ending a long run of frustration against Berkshire County North Division rival Pittsfield.
The speedy sophomore, a runner-up in the 100-meter dash at last spring’s Central/Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships, had an assist in the 3-1 win over Pittsfield and scored the lone goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Lenox.
“Having her takes the pressure off the defense,” Mount Greylock coach Tom Ostheimer said of the forward. “They can relax a little bit. And I thought [freshman] Clara McWeeny and her worked together well. They had a lot of good combination passing into the corner.”
