WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock girls soccer team is still in search of that one point to clinch a spot in the Western Mass tournament; unfortunately for the Mounties they were unable to assure that spot in a 4-1 loss to Wahconah on Thursday evening.

Wahconah opened the scoring in the first half off a goal from Kat Lewis. Perin Genaway sent a ball above the 18 that a Mountie defender was unable to clear. Lewis took control of the ball and sent one on net to put her team ahead, 1-0.

Four minutes later, Wahconah’s Emmy Cote let one fly from outside the 18 that was placed perfectly out of Mount Greylock goalie Charolette Rand’s reach, putting Wahconah up 2-0.

Greylock continued to produce action offensivelym, sending the ball up the field to Lucy Barrett and Kelsey Orpin who used their speed to create a lot of opportunities. But Wahconah’s defense refused to let down.

“Greylock has a lot of speed,” Wahconah coach Pat West said. “They just keep coming at you, they shoot hard, and they work hard.”

“Barrett and Orpin are really strong players, we just tried to keep them in check, but they have a lot more speed. The last three days we just took our players that have speed and worked with them.”

Mount Greylock finally put one on net in the final three minutes of the half off of a corner kick. Orpin received the ball and passed it off to Barrett inside of the 18. She shot to the high corner to get the Mounties on the board.

Greylock came out in the second half much more aggressive looking to come back and earn that one point to clinch a spot in the Western Mass Tournament. They moved the ball up the field, got shots on net, and defensively worked the ball out of the box, but Wahconah was able to get two more goals to walk away with the 4-1 win.

“I think we have to be more patient on offense, we had a lot of opportunities, but their sweeper pretty much gobbled everything up,” Greylock coach Tom Osthimier said. “We have to work the ball wider, our plan was to get some counter attacks and we had a few.”

Wahconah’s last two goals came from Adren McKnight on a shot from outside that sailed over Rand's head and Ashley Zink, who deflected one off a Greylock defender into the net.

Greylock now (8-5); hosts Lenox on Tuesday. Wahconah (11-2) hosts Hoosac Valley Monday evening.
